Start a Game in 3 Steps

  1. Choose your opponent.

Select Play AI to play against the computer, or choose 2 Players to share the device with another person. The board is ready to use as soon as the page loads; there is no setup form.

  2. Take the first turn.

Black moves first. In AI mode, you control black and the computer controls red. In two-player mode, sit together and agree who will move each color; the game does not offer a color picker.

  3. Move or capture.

Select one of your pieces, then choose a highlighted square. A regular piece moves one step diagonally forward. If a jump is available, you must capture; keep jumping with that piece when another capture is open.

Use the board above to play checkers online free without a separate setup page. If you want the complete move guide, see the American checkers rules.

Pick Your Opponent

  • Computer: Choose Easy, Medium, Hard, or Expert. Easy picks a random legal move; stronger levels search ahead. You play black and the computer plays red. Black moves first.
  • Another person: Choose 2 Players and share one phone, tablet, or computer. Take turns moving black and red pieces on the same board. Agree who will play each color before starting; there is no color picker.
  • A friend on another device: This is a local game, with no friend link, private room, separate-device match, or online lobby. You cannot connect to someone elsewhere through this page. Read the computer opponent guide or the two-player mode guide.

Play on Desktop, Tablet, or Phone

On a desktop computer, click a piece and then its highlighted destination, drag the piece with a mouse, or use the keyboard to focus squares and choose a move. On a tablet, tap a piece and tap a highlighted square, or drag the piece to a legal destination. On a phone, tap the piece and destination; touch dragging also works.

The board rearranges to fit a narrow screen, while the controls remain above it. A color label below the board identifies the side at each end. In computer mode, the human side is black. In two-player mode, use the labels to keep track as you pass the device.

This is a standard American checkers game on an 8×8 board. Men move and capture forward, kings move one square diagonally in either direction, and captures are mandatory. A king is crowned when a man reaches the far row; that turn ends there. For all move details, open the rules page.

With a keyboard, tab to the board and use the arrow keys to move focus between squares. Activate a focused square with Enter or Space. The square labels include their coordinates and any piece on them, while the status line tells you whose turn it is and whether a jump is required.

If a checker can make another jump, continue with that same piece until the chain ends. New game resets the current position. When local storage is available, this checkers game saves the board, mode, and difficulty in the same browser so you can resume after a refresh. Without storage, play can continue in the current tab, but a refresh will not restore the position.
